What's up mane! I'm excited you found my page where I plan to document my journey to and through Midwifery school. I'm Kaila Matthews, a student Midwife in Memphis,TN. My long-term goal is to become a CPM and provide out of hospital support to families that desire in my city. Learn more about my background at my business page, WhatTheDoula.
As a certified Doula and Student Midwife, she increases awareness amongst women about maternal healthcare but targets minority women and their unique birthing experience through Birth, Postpartum, and Lactation support. She is a certified yoga instructor and uses her knowledge of movement and breath to help birthing people relax and meet pain in a manageable way for safe out of hospital birth.
Kaila is passionate about supporting and advocating for maternal health and hosts monthly childbirth and lactation classes aimed at transferring important information to parents. Since opening in 2019, she has supported over 150+ families as a Doula and served over 700+ lactation support hours. In addition to her vital work as a doula, Kaila gives back to the Memphis community through her work as a yoga teacher. She teaches at Elite Fitness Health & Wellness and CHOICES, and often guest teaches at The Yoga Kickback. Her niche is pregnant women and beginner-intermediate yogis. Kaila loves the opportunity to help people move their bodies and breathe better or more intentionally. She believes the things taught on the mat are transferable, and her community deserves that love.
By 2027, Kaila hopes to offer midwifery services and would one day love to open a Maternal Health and Wellness center where pregnant and postpartum people can access equitable resources and consistent support.

Philosophy of Practice:
I believe every family deserves equitable providers and access to resources that can enhance their perinatal experience and outcomes. As a Certified Professional Midwife, I uphold the Midwifery Model of Care as outline by and honor the unique experiences, needs, and desires of the birthing people and populations I serve. I am called to this work, and trust the guidance of the ancestors and God to guide my hands, keep my mind and heart pure and steadfast on client-centered care, and I believe our connections protect us. The client's birth is their choice and it is my honor to guide families to make informed decisions while discovering their rights and responsibilities along the way.
My 6 commitments Equity and Social Justice:
As I matriculate, I commit to speaking up about unknown barriers that impact me or my peers.
I commit to supporting my peers' retention by staying in community to the best of my ability to keep up on track to pass.
I commit to taking the research and evidence back to my community to be a solution for underrepresented communities.
I commit to striving for excellence in my studies and ensuring that my work adds value to the community and topics at hand.
I commit to collaborate with organizations in my local community to raise awareness to the benefits of community Midwifery and the MMOC.
I commit to utilize the services and resources provided through MCU including office hours this term.
